Sleep spindles and general cognitive ability – A meta-analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
The scientific discussion of sleep spindles now routinely mentions the association between these oscillations and cognitive ability. Numerous studies have been published on topic with various methodologies highly divergent results. In this meta-analysis relevant literature (total k = 22 articles, total N 953 subjects), it is concluded that there evidence for a modest positive ability slow ( r .113) fast .183) spindle amplitudes also some an duration .087) but none associations other parameters. Evidence publication bias was found in case amplitude density, correlation robust to effect. Studies more females reported weaker duration, effect driven by single study all-male sample, no size significantly moderated age or sex. Most were conducted small data sets did not exhaustively report all measured associations. It recommended future having access both intelligence measures their associations, regardless nature, be pooled across research groups statistical power, at least basic agreement detection classification criteria reached community.

Sleep Spindles and Intellectual Ability: Epiphenomenon or Directly Related?
Sleep spindles-short, phasic, oscillatory bursts of activity that characterize non-rapid eye movement sleep-are one of the only electrophysiological oscillations identified as a biological marker of human intelligence (e.g., cognitive abilities commonly assessed using intelligence quotient tests). However, spindles are also important for sleep maintenance and are modulated by circadian factors....

Research on the SAT has shown a substantial correlation with measures of g such as the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Another widely administered test for college admission is the American College Test (ACT). Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, measures of g were derived from the ASVAB and correlated with ACT scores for 1075 participants. The resulting cor...

The development of EEC sleep-spindles in prematurely-born and full-term infants was studied to test an hypothesized impact of experience (longer extrauterine existence) upon innate maturational factors (EEG development). The age of otiset of sleep spindles and achievement of mature spindle quality occurs approximately 4 weeks earlier in prematurely-born infants than in full-term infants. Sleep ...

General cognitive ability (g), often referred to as 'general intelligence', predicts social outcomes such as educational and occupational levels far better than any other behavioural trait. g is one of the most heritable behavioural traits, and genes that contribute to the heritability of g will certainly be identified. What are the scientific and social implications of finding genes associated...
